Daddy comes into Pocahontas Jones’s room, while she’s sleeping. He touches her briefly, and she wakes slowly – “I’m tired”, she says. “I told you.” She has to get up early! He encourages her to press the button yet again, and as tired as she is, she presses it. The cute, hypnontic (but short) music plays again, and she yawns. She wants some water before she goes to sleep, but…she can’t move her legs! It’s like they hurt, but they don’t – they’re just stiff, like they’re frozen. So weird! And she’s sooooo sleepy…she asks Daddy for some water, but he wants her to play the song again. He promises it will help.
She obliges, and plays it again. Now she’s irritated – she can’t figure out what’s going on – now she can’t move her hands! What’s wrong with her? Now daddy goes and plays the song again, with the stuffed toy, and suddenly, Pocahontas can’t speak! She can moan and make noises, but her mouth is frozen, along with most of her body. He takes advantage of the situation and feels her beautiful, fair legs, so smooth, so soft. She’s stiff – frozen – as if she’s a doll. He moves her arm, and it stays where he positions it. A living doll! He moves her other arm, up in the air – and she can’t move it down, or talk – just noises and concerned “mmphing”. He moves her head, touching her jaw. She can make the barest of noises, and look around, but the rest of her body is stiff and numb. She’s trying to say something, but she can’t enunciate anything, and so she’s trapped, trapped inside herself.
